I went to college in Gainesville, FL.

Around the city, there were these 8-foot tall wooden pillars about 4 feet wide, similar to a stumpy telephone pole.

They were located near major intersections with lots of foot traffic.

Students or anyone hosting a local event could use these pillars to staple or attach a show poster.

These pillars have been there for decades, and tens of thousands of show posters have come and gone. Often, you'd have to remove enough staples and nails to fit your poster on top.

Once a month, the city would come around and remove all the posters in one fell swoop. They'd have to use an X-Acto knife to cut through the wall of paper and glue.

Even though I skipped most events around town, it was nice to know what was going on locally. It felt like a town message board.

Lately, I've been seeing more and more show posters pop up in unexpected places like telephone poles, windows of unoccupied apartments, and on the sides of trash cans.

Could we bring back the community show pillars?
