Heartbreak at the AMC

I've been an AMC Stubs member for a little over 2 years.

It's a monthly movie membership that lets you see up to 3 movies per week at any AMC theater for $25 per month.

When compared to the price of a movie ticket at my local movie theater ($26 for an IMAX ticket), it's a no-brainer to get the membership. It's literally cheaper than a movie ticket for unlimited movies instead of just one ticket!

Needless to say, I'm at AMC a lot.

And if you're an AMC regular, there's no doubt you've seen their now-iconic advertisement featuring Nicole Kidman. In the roughly one-minute ad, she delivers an impassioned speech about the value of movies and cinema in our culture.

She declares, "Our heroes feel like the best part of us. We go somewhere we’ve never been before."

The speech has become so iconic that moviegoers recite the words along with Nicole whenever it plays. Like the Pledge of Allegiance.

Despite running for nearly three years, AMC recently changed the advertisement to 3 shorter versions. Now, the ads run for about a third of the time.

They cut out many of the meme-worthy quotes that inspired Halloween costumes and jokes on late-night talk shows.

Now, the new ad shows several clips of Kidman entering the movie theater and delivering lines that were clearly left on the cutting room floor the first time.

Following up an ad like this is a recipe for disaster, I'm sure. AMC can't possibly capture the cheesy magic of this original.

Maybe they're setting us up for surprise and delight by unveiling an exceptional ad later this year? Is this temporary? Tell me, AMC!

Right now, heartbreak doesn’t feel good in a place like this.
